Saddle Fitting and Positive Reinforcement pt. 3 - the Reverse Round Pen.

The reverse round pen is a great tool to use for saddle fitting. It allows us to have a consistent movement to assess without having to use a traditional lunging setup.

We teach the Horse how to go around the circle with a combination of physical, verbal, and environmental cues, taught with positive reinforcement. There is also the option to mount the rider, making this an accessible option for Horses just being started, but who still need a fitting saddle.

If we want to look at other movements, we can design a different shape. For example, to see the Horse's ability to maintain an inside bend and abduct the shoulder, we can create a square with corners to move around.

What skills should my horse know before having a saddle fitting?

Aside from the obvious that they need to be safe to lead, if the saddle fitting is going to be worth you, your saddle fitter, and your horse's time, you should at least be able to see the saddle in some type of movement. This can be lunging, a reverse round pen, or (preferably!), riding.

As a saddle fitter, I need a consistent movement so that I can see if my adjustments were effective. Personally, I won't do a saddle fitting if I don't have the option of seeing it in movement. I always prefer to see the saddle with the rider mounted, as a saddle fitting isn't just about the horse, it's about making sure the saddle fits in relation to both the horse and the rider. However, if you are wanting a saddle fitting done before starting your horse, I can do that too, it will just need to be adjusted again when you start regularly riding.

Cooperative care is a form of training that makes the horse an active participant in their care, and teaches them clear ways to say yes or no to something being done to their bodies.

When we combine saddle fitting and cooperative care, we give the horse a choice in the process, and work through any tension or anxiety around the saddle/tack with kindness and patience.

As a saddle fitter, I love working with horses trained in cooperative care. It decreases the stress both I and the horse feels, and creates a much safer environment for me to work in.

How do I find a good system/course for _____?

Honest answer, you don't.

You just have to start somewhere, someplace you at least feel safe and comfortable learning in, and then slowly, as you get more skilled and confident, branch out and double check what you thought you knew.

Everybody is about 50% wrong in the horse world. Because it's impossible for someone to be an expert in every small nuance of the current science. And because by the time you've really learned something the first time, the science has already changed.

And because sometimes, that technique isn't right for that horse in that moment.

For me, it's less about the courses someone took, or the credentials they have, and more about how they committed themselves to constantly learning and changing, and questioning the beliefs they used to have.

I will never be finished fact-checking everything I (think) I know. My tbr of studies is endless. But I'm committed to the journey!

We often talk about 'holding space' in individualizing terms. It's us, the humans, holding the space for the processes unfolding around us.

But what about the herd, are they not holding us too?
What about the soil we walk on? Does ki not play a role?
Or the water and wind?
Our flora, fauna, and insect kin? Our more-than-human relatives?
The funghi and microbes?
Are they not a part of this?

What would it be like, to hold the earth and feel it hold you back?

You don't have to do it all by yourself, all the healing and holding, because we have the entire world supporting us.

By fitting saddles properly we can free up the horse's body and allow them to move in a different way. Of course, there are hundreds of reasons why a horse won't move in a specific way, but saddle fit can be a ginormous limiting factor in your movement.

I speak many different languages. When I enter into different spaces, I switch to different ways of speaking. When I talk to Intrinzeneers, I speak in their words. When I talk to writers, or even think about their work, I begin to even think my thoughts in their language. When I talk to my friend who has taken on an Aggressive gen z accent, I start to say the word 'pookie.' Its not like I'm losing myself to fit in or appease other people. I am still myself in all of these situations, but I become myself in their words. I've also written a lot of works, and recently I've been writing materials for beginners to Intrinzen, and I am writing with a completely different voice again. What is often a rambling metaphor for my embodied knowledge becomes a beginner, simple, honestly sometimes mechanistic, version of myself and what I do. But I'm still myself within that. And I like that this voice leaves space for others to find themselves within my teachings.

So I'm left wondering, how many versions of me are out there? And which one is the 'real' one? Or, which one is the most authentic? Which one should I share? You know, to be perceived as an 'authentic voice' on the internet.

I don't think that there is one 'real' voice. If a vase shatters into 100 pieces, which piece is the original one? None of them are. But I'm still motivated by a desire to have a consistent 'voice' in my writing. But we are too many things to fit on an Instagram page. We are more than one thing, and really when it comes to language, we are more than just ourselves.

In the past month, I've made a few posts in an attempt to market myself as a trainer. Except none of them feel-like 'me.' I took on the voices of other people, trying out their language for myself. But I feel icky. They aren't bad, but they also aren't anything to really be proud of. So now come the experiments about how to 'market' myself, as a coach and a saddle fitter, while still staying rooted within my own self. To attempt at sharing from a grounded, self-informed place. Writing things that make me proud.

This Event was extended to allow time for more participants to enter. We need at least 2 more participants to run the event. Of course, spectators are always welcome to join as well!

The Intrinzen Showcase is a place for our heroes to show off how strong, agile, and badass they are to a crowd of supportive community members. It's a horse show without prizes or winners, where we come together to inspire and be inspired by each other, no threats allowed. There is room for both spectators and participants to enjoy the show and space to share and receive positive feedback on the performances.

The Intrinzen Showcase takes place the second Saturday of every month, at 1200ET. Each showcase will have a different theme or constraint, so be prepared to watch some new movement solutions emerge. This month's theme is open, where participants can submit performances of whatever feels right.

This event is free of charge, but future events will charge a small entrance fee to cover the cost of hosting.

What is the purpose of the gym mat?...

The gym mat provides us with an unstable surface to make our (or our horses') little adjustments in balance bigger so that we can train our balance (vestibular) system to be better and more robust. This also trains our muscles to be better at stabilizing ourselves.

When we train on the gym mat, it also "wakes up" our nervous system. The receptors in our body that pick up on movement (mechanoreceptors) are activated and adapt to improve our proprioception, or the body's knowledge of where it is in space.

Finally, the gym mat can also open up the doors to new movements, as we fall in and out of unique postures through the activity of balancing ourselves. The gym mat is especially helpful for horses who tend to get stuck in one movement pattern and need to find more diversity.

The gym mat is one of my favourite tools because of how impactful it is on the whole system, to reawaken the body to movement. Let me know what your experience with the mat has been in the comments!

- Sidekicks must be respectful and kind to fellow participants.
- All video footage must be taken on the same day.

Participants submit a 5-minute video of their horse’s coolest moves to share, and receive back positive comments and feedback. Afterwards, we will talk about what you enjoyed about the event, how it could be improved, and where you would be interested in it going in the future.

The event has room for 5 participants, and will run for one hour. There is no charge to participate. To sign up, send me a DM!

I know because I and many of my colleagues have done it before, and have the skills to teach you, if you desire. It is possible to create a true partnership based off of mutual respect and trust.
